How to make Boom Bap style rap bases in 11 steps

Creating rap beats may seem intimidating, but with the right workflow, it’s a mechanical and highly creative process. In this guide we break down the exact steps to building a classic Boom Bap foundation from scratch.

If you are looking for a truly professional and analog sound,24 years of producing urban music in Barcelonawill support us.

1.Choose the Correct Tempo

The tempo defines the speed of your beat. For a Boom Bap rap beat, choose between 80 and 100BPM (pulses per minute): -80-90BPM: Slow, ideal for relaxed vibes. -90-98BPM:Standard, balanced groove. -99-108BPM:Fast, more energetic. Ethical and aggressive.

2.La Cajayel Bombo (The Heart)

The snare is the rhythmic engine of rap. Place it on beats 2 and 4 to mark the characteristic Boom Bap groove.

Next, add the kick drum. Place it on beats 1 and 3 for a solid pattern that gives the performer’s voice room to breathe.

3.Hi-Hat(Charles)and Percussion

The hi-hat divides the rhythm. Place it every half beat (eighth notes) to add fluidity and swing. Use the wing or groove parameter in your MPCo DAW to make it sound less robotic.

Complement with minor percussions such as shakers and drums in the background to add acoustic texture.

4.Bass Line808o Synth Bass

It incorporates aline belowsub bass. In classic Boom Bap, played basses or filtered jazz samples are usually used. The bass should complement the kick drum pattern and establish the rhythmic root of the beat.

5.Melody and Samples (The Soul)

6. Beat Structure

A professional beat needs to evolve to maintain attention: -Intro:4-8 bars. -Verse 1:16 bars. -Chorus (Chorus):8 bars. -Verse 2:16 bars. -Outro:4-8 barswithfadeout.

7.Mix Mastering

A base is not recommended if it sounds flat or weak. Apply subtractive EQ, drum compression, and master your beat to meet Spotify’s LUFS standards.
